John William Waterhouse is an Englishman (1849–1917) born to English painters William and Isabella Waterhouse. When young he lived in South Kensington London near the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is said that he often sketched works in the National Gallery and British Museum. At first he painted in the academic style but later embraced the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’s style and subject matter. He is known for his descriptions of women from ancient Greek legends and the tales of Arthur. The images above are some of his paintings and show his style and subject matter well.

Luis Ricardo Falero (1851–1896) was born in Granada, Spain. His parents hoped he would take up a naval career in the Spanish Navy but he travelled to Paris and became a painter. He studied under Gabriel Ferrier, a French portrait and orientalist painter. Later on he continued to London and settled there. He specialized in female nudes in fantastic or oriental environments. The images above are good examples. His paintings can be classed as “erotic” but other famous painters of his day such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau or Jean-Léon Gérôme were also as “erotic”.
